Is Praktika good? An honest answer, from someone building a competitor

Full disclosure before anything else: I'm building Axo, an iOS app for practicing spoken Spanish, which makes Praktika a competitor of mine. That's a reason to hold this page to a higher standard, not a lower one. So here's the deal: every factual claim below links to its source, every number was checked on August 28, 2026, and where the honest answer is flattering to Praktika, it's printed anyway. If a comparison can only be won by fudging, it isn't worth winning.

The short answer

Yes. By the clearest measure available, Praktika is good. It holds 4.8 stars from roughly 162,000 ratings on the US App Store. An average that high, across that many people, is not something a mediocre app can fake, and any review page that pretends otherwise is selling you something.

The fuller picture has one asterisk. Praktika's Trustpilot score is notably lower: 3.7 out of 5 from about 1,177 reviews, with 18% one-star, and the one-star reviews there lean heavily on billing and refund frustration rather than teaching quality. Both numbers are real at the same time. App Store ratings tend to come from in-app prompts at happy moments; Trustpilot tends to collect the people frustrated enough to go find Trustpilot. Read together, they say something believable: most people who use Praktika like it, and the unhappy minority is mostly unhappy about subscriptions, not Spanish.

What Praktika actually is: an AI language tutor app where you have voice conversations with what its own App Store listing calls "ultra-realistic AI Avatars" with "full backstories, cultural depth, and natural accents." It teaches 12 languages, including Spanish, so if you first heard of it as an English-practice app, know that it's a genuine option for Spanish learners too.

How much is the Praktika app?

Praktika's own site doesn't currently publish a working pricing page (its pricing and FAQ pages return errors), so the reliable source is the In-App Purchases list on its US App Store page. As of August 28, 2026, it shows:

Two honest observations about that sheet. First, the standard 3-month tier works out to more per month than the monthly plan, while the 3-month promo works out to less, so which tier you land on matters. Second, there are enough overlapping duration and promo tiers ($6.99 up to $139.99) that two people can pay quite different amounts for the same app. Neither of those is a scandal; it just means you should check exactly which purchase you're confirming before you tap.

One number to ignore: praktika.ai's homepage has advertised a monthly figure around $8, which doesn't match any purchase currently listed on the US App Store, most likely stale or region-specific marketing copy. Plan your budget around the App Store list, because that's where you'll actually be charged.

Is there a free version? Praktika is free to download, and recent App Store reviews reference a free trial. What the free tier includes, though, isn't published anywhere we could verify, so treat Praktika as a subscription app and treat anything free as a bonus.

A neutral tip that applies to every subscription app, Praktika included: trials convert on a timer, and disputes about that timing are the most common complaint in Praktika's critical reviews. One App Store reviewer (1 star, August 26, 2026) wrote: "This app will bill you before your trial expires. I did NOT authorize." That is one person's account (not a verified pattern, and it sits against 162,000 mostly happy ratings), but the protection is universal: iPhone subscriptions are managed by Apple under Settings → your name → Subscriptions, and cancelling at least 24 hours before renewal is the safe margin.

What recent reviewers actually say

The praise is the rating itself: 4.8 across a very large base. The recurring critical themes in the most recent reviews are worth knowing too, quoted here as dated, individual opinions rather than facts about the app:

"The AI voice is not natural enough for the money they are asking" (App Store review, 2 stars, August 26, 2026)

The avatar "talks far too much and repeats a lot… it reads the same information out loud, and for me this becomes very tiring and irritating" (Trustpilot review, August 12, 2026)

Two voices out of tens of thousands don't define a product. But they do tell you what to test during a trial: does the voice feel natural to you, and does the conversation adapt to you rather than lecture? Those are exactly the things a week of real use will settle, and no review (including this one) can settle for you.

"Ultra-realistic" vs. deliberately not: the real difference

Here's the genuinely interesting part of a Praktika–Axo comparison, and it's a matter of taste, not a flaw on either side. Praktika's design bet, in its own words, is "ultra-realistic AI Avatars" built to "simulate truly human-like interaction." That's a legitimate bet: the closer the avatar is to a person, the closer the practice is to the real conversations you're preparing for, and 162K ratings suggest it's working for a lot of people.

Axo made the opposite bet, on purpose. Your tutor is a warm, animated axolotl. You pick from three characters: Axo, Xolo, or Yara. Not because realism is out of reach, but because of who tends to freeze. For many learners, the thing that shuts down their Spanish isn't grammar: it's the social pressure of a human face watching them make mistakes. If a human-like avatar recreates the practice, it can also recreate the stage fright. A friendly cartoon axolotl lowers the stakes: nobody has ever felt judged by an axolotl. So the honest sorting question isn't "which app is better." It's which kind of practice partner gets you to open your mouth every day. If realistic human simulation motivates you, Praktika is a well-rated way to get it. If a human-like face makes you self-conscious, a charming animated one is the whole point of Axo.

What Axo does differently under the hood

• You control the turn. Axo is tap-to-talk: the tutor waits while you think, for as long as you need, and nothing is sent until you tap. It never talks over you. Thinking time is where speaking actually gets built, so the app is designed to protect it.
• Corrections come as gentle recasts. When you say "yo sabo," the tutor replies naturally using "yo sé," spoken aloud, the way a patient native-speaker friend corrects you. No buzzer, no red X.
• Your voice never leaves your phone. Axo's speech recognition runs on-device using Apple's built-in speech recognizer. Raw audio stays on your phone; only the recognized text is sent, and only with your explicit consent. For comparison: Praktika doesn't advertise on-device speech processing (we found no claim about it either way on its site or App Store listing), so if this matters to you, read its privacy policy before subscribing.
• It remembers you. Axo keeps a learner memory between sessions (your level, your recurring mistakes, the fact that you mentioned your dog last Tuesday), so each conversation starts where the last one left off.
• Free to download, no ads. Axo is free to download on the App Store. Spanish only, iOS only, built by one person in public.

What about TalkPal?

If Praktika is on your shortlist, TalkPal usually is too. Quick verified numbers: TalkPal's US App Store purchases list Premium at $19.99/month, $49.99 for 3 months, or $119.99/year, it's rated 4.7 from about 3,500 ratings, and its official pricing page documents a free Basic plan with a 10-minute daily chat limit plus a 14-day trial. Spanish is among its 130+ languages. We haven't tested its teaching quality, so no verdict: just the numbers you'd otherwise have to dig for.
